Cases
Law is an evolving, dynamic force in our society. It takes
courageous, innovative attorneys to effectively fight injustice and make
positive changes. Steven Fury and William Bailey have been at the forefront of many important
cases that have made a great difference in Washington families. These are just a few
examples:
- Sleep Deprivation. Studies show that Americans work longer and harder
than workers anywhere else. There have been many fatigue related catastrophes including the Exxon
Valdez oil spill of 1989 and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident of 1979. However, despite
the danger to the public, no standards existed for the safe limits of fatigue on the job. William
Bailey's representation of Dave Truitt became the leading national case on sleep deprivation. In
September, 1991, Mr. Truitt was ordered to work 36 straight hours on a paper mill repair job in
southern Washington. On his way home, he fell asleep at the wheel and veered off the road, suffering
severe brain injuries. The case was featured in USA Today, The Detroit News and a number
of other national publications. Right-wing radio personality, Rush Limbaugh, specifically criticized
Bailey on his show for bringing the suit, which Bailey regards as an honor.
