- British Petroleum (BP) Explosion. On January 19, 1991, the Ferndale,
Washington plant of BP was rocked by a fiery explosion. Rock Strickler was a pipe fitter there who
suffered severe burns and orthopedic injuries. William Bailey's dogged investigation revealed a
cover-up of unsafe practices by BP, as a safety report was suppressed. The case settled for $
1.75 million.
