• Washington State Ferry Cases. In 1988 Steve Fury represented LeRoy Koerber, an African American deckhand for the Washington State Ferry System who had been the target of outrageous racial harassment. This case led to sweeping changes in the State Ferry System, including a lead editorial "Bigotry Pervades State Ferry System" in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and the resignation of the Chief of Washington State Ferries and its director of operations.

  • The Mattress Industry. Steve Fury brought on a difficult case against the mattress industry on behalf of a small child who was severely burned when her polyurethane mattress caught on fire. Although there was no indication that these mattresses, which were marketed to children, posed any danger, Fury learned that the industry had known for quite some time that untreated polyurethane foam constitutes an extreme fire hazard. However, the industry chose to do nothing about this. When the mattress company president from Chicago was asked whether the company cared about child safety for mattresses, he replied "no", because "children don't buy mattresses." After years of hard work, the mattress manufacturer was brought to justice.
